AI Growth Kit vs Video2X
If you already own a Vulkan-compatible GPU and don't mind installing an app, Video2X wins on price almost every time: it's free and open-source, with no account, no credits and no per-minute charge, however much you render. AI Growth Kit is the better choice with no GPU, nothing to install and no model to pick — a price per second from any browser, for a quick clip or when you also want to translate or subtitle the same video.
| AI Growth Kit | Video2X | |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Credits, no subscription needed. Packs: $9 for 200, $29 for 750, $59 for 1,800, never expiring. Plans: $19 a month for 600, $49 for 2,000. | Free and open-source (GNU AGPLv3). No price, no account, no plan to pick — download it and run it. |
| License and current release | Proprietary hosted service. | GNU AGPLv3, free to use and modify. Current release: 6.4.0 (January 24, 2025). |
| Free plan or trial | 20 credits once, at sign-up (6 seconds of upscaling). No watermark. | Not applicable — there's no paid tier to trial. The whole app is free, permanently. |
| Where it runs | In the browser. No install, no GPU required. | A desktop app you install yourself: a Windows installer, or on Linux an AUR package or AppImage. No native macOS app — Mac users run a container image instead. |
| Hardware needed | None — any device with a browser. | A Vulkan-compatible GPU: NVIDIA Kepler (GTX 600 series, 2012) or newer, AMD GCN 1.0 (Radeon HD 7000 series, 2012) or newer, or Intel HD Graphics 4000 (2012) or newer. |
| Where your file goes | Uploaded to our servers; the source video is deleted after 30 days, output kept until you delete the task. | Never leaves your machine — upscaling and interpolation both run locally. |
| Upscaling methods | One AI upscaler to 4K, 3 credits per second (180 a minute). | Real-ESRGAN, Real-CUGAN or Anime4K v4, or a custom MPV-compatible GLSL shader — you choose the model and output resolution per job. |
| Frame interpolation | Not offered. | RIFE, in every model version the project ships (6.4.0 added RIFE v4.25 and v4.26) — raises frame rate, not just resolution. |
| Interface | A web form: upload, pick settings, download. | A Qt6 graphical app with a task queue (Windows, Linux), or the command line with flags for codec, GPU selection and more. |
| Upload or file limits | MP4, MOV or WebM, up to 30 minutes per video. | No limit from the software itself — your disk space and patience are the ceiling. |
| Other tools from the same account | Translation, subtitles, image and video generation, video extend and edit — all from the same credit balance. | None — Video2X only upscales and interpolates frames. |
Where Video2X is clearly better
It's free, forever, with no catch: open-source under the GNU AGPLv3, no account, no credits to buy. If you upscale routinely and already own a qualifying GPU, there's no price to beat — $0 whether you render one minute or a thousand.
It also does more: four upscaling methods to choose from (Real-ESRGAN, Real-CUGAN, Anime4K v4, or a custom shader) plus RIFE frame interpolation to raise frame rate, not just resolution — we offer one upscaler and no interpolation. And nothing uploads anywhere, since every job runs on your own machine.
There's no file-length ceiling from the software itself, only your own hardware and disk space — against our 30-minute upload cap.
Where AI Growth Kit is better
No GPU, no install, nothing to configure. Video2X needs a Vulkan-compatible GPU that meets its minimums, and on Mac there's no native app at all — you run a container image instead. Getting set up can take longer than a short job takes to upload and download on our side.
Getting started is immediate: open a browser tab, upload, download. There's no app (or container image) to install first, and no model or shader to pick before you can see a result.
The same balance also pays for translation, subtitles and AI-generated video clips — Video2X only upscales and interpolates frames.
If you don't already own a GPU that meets Video2X's minimums, buying one to use it "for free" has a real cost of its own that a single short job on AI Growth Kit will never reach.
What it costs at three monthly volumes
Our rate is 3 credits per second (180 a minute); Video2X is $0 in software cost at every volume below, on hardware you already own.
A single 2-minute clip, upscaled once: 2 × 180 = 360 credits, so two $9 Starter Packs (400 credits) for $18, one time, no subscription. Video2X: $0, once it's installed and your GPU is set up.
10 minutes a month: 10 × 180 = 1,800 credits. The $49 Pro plan covers it with 200 credits to spare. Video2X: still $0 a month, rendered locally, however many times you run it.
60 minutes a month: 60 × 180 = 10,800 credits. The Pro plan's 2,000 credits cover the first 11 minutes for $49; the remaining 8,800 credits need about 4.9 Power Packs (8,800 ÷ 1,800 × $59 ≈ $288), roughly $337 a month in total. Video2X is still $0 — this is the volume where owning the hardware wins outright, by the widest margin of any comparison on this site.
How to decide
Start from whether you already own a Vulkan-compatible GPU, and whether this is a one-off job or a routine one.
- Already own a qualifying GPU and upscale often: Video2X, free at every volume above.
- No GPU, or a one-off job you want finished in the next few minutes: AI Growth Kit.
- Want frame interpolation, or a choice of upscaling model: Video2X — we offer neither.
- Want a translated or subtitled version of the same video from the same place: AI Growth Kit.
Choose Video2X if…
- You already own a Vulkan-compatible GPU that meets its minimums (NVIDIA Kepler, AMD GCN 1.0, Intel HD 4000, or newer) — Video2X is free at any volume, forever.
- You want a choice of upscaling model (Real-ESRGAN, Real-CUGAN, Anime4K v4, custom shaders) or need frame interpolation — neither is something we offer.
- Your file can't leave your machine at all.
- You upscale often enough that even our cheapest pack adds up, and you have the time to install and run the app yourself.
Choose AI Growth Kit if…
- You don't own a Vulkan-compatible GPU, or don't want to install anything — a browser tab and an upload are the whole setup.
- The job is a one-off or urgent: no app or container image to install, no model to pick, no GPU drivers to troubleshoot.
- You also want to translate, subtitle or generate video from the same account and credit balance.
- You want a flat, published price per second before you upload, instead of a result that depends on your own hardware.
Questions
Is Video2X really free, no catch?
Yes. It's open-source under the GNU AGPLv3 license, hosted on GitHub, with no paid tier, account or usage cap. The real cost is the GPU it needs and the time to install and configure it.
Can I use both?
Yes. If you own a qualifying GPU, run routine upscaling jobs locally in Video2X for free; use our Upscaler on a device without one, for a quick one-off, or when you also want to translate or caption the same video.
